Some say 84 days is 12 weeks and others say 90 days is 12 weeks… which is correct? I had a 86 day negative, is this conclusive/can I trust these results? Though I still have many symptoms

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting our Helpline for HIV related information. We are happy to assist you.

I can see that you're feeling some anxiety about the accuracy of your test result.

First of all, the 3 month window period is an extremely conservative guideline for testing. In fact, 95% of people have detectable antibodies after only 4-6 weeks. In your case, 86 days is close enough to this 3 month mark that a few days will not make a difference. The 4th generation test is even more accurate earlier, and many experts consider it conclusive at 6 weeks.

I hope I have addressed your concerns. Feel free to contact us again through our forums, email, or phone line if you have further questions.

Thanks,

Sandra
