hi there thanks for doing what you do!
a friend of mine gave me a massage recently and after that I saw he had a cut on his finger with bandaid on it. apparently his cut was pretty fresh too. Is this a risk if some of his blood somehow got to my skin rash through bandaid?

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting our Helpline for HIV related information. We are happy to assist you.

No, you are not at risk from the activity you described. HIV is a weak virus so it can no longer be transmitted once exposed to air; it can't be transmitted through dried blood on surfaces or objects. It also needs direct access to the bloodstream, which a rash would not provide. This is why it is mainly transmitted through unprotected sex and needle sharing. Please visit our Risk Assessment Chart to find out more about how transmission can occur: http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart

I hope we have addressed you concerns. Feel free to contact us again if you have further questions.

Thank you,

Sandra,

AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteer
