Hi Dr, I had unprotected vaginal intercourse with my girlfriend that i have known for about 4 months now on the 6th of December. Shortly after that a (about a week) after the initial exposure, I started feeling some flu like symptoms; started with severe pain on my lower right side back, fatigue and low grade fevers of 98.6F continuing till now, one day nausea, swollen lymph nodes around groin, armpit and neck, weight loss and loss of appetite. Went to Physician Immediate Care 22 days after that, HIV -1/2 4th Gen ag/ab tests administered which turned out non reactive. Did another rapid antibody lab based test at 4 weeks (negative). I am dying of anxiety and insomnia and my girlfriend is refusing to test because she is scared. I guess she must have had a bad past or she is hiding something from me. Are there any chances that, the two tests I have taken 22 days 4th Generation ab/ag test and 4 weeks ab test reassuring? Please help

Hello and thank you for contacting us!

Here at AIDS Vancouver, we do not use symptoms to determine HIV status. This is because some people show them, others do not, and they often get confused with other illnesses like the flu. For this reason, you may wish to visit your doctor if your symptoms are still persisting. They may be signs of other illnesses aside from HIV.

In regard to your testing, the tests you took were done at the correct times. This means they are very accurate. However, they cannot be considered conclusive until a test is taken at 3 months post-exposure. I would recommend one last test at the 3 month mark.

It is understandable that your girlfriend is afraid of testing. Perhaps she fears the possible needle involved or her results. However, we do encourage regular HIV/STI testing to all those that are sexually active, so please tell your girlfriend that there is nothing to be worried about! We want you to have safe and healthy bodies and lives.

I hope this answers your question. If not, please send us another message for further clarification.

Best,

Caroline
