Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the accuracy of a 3rd generation test you accessed 6.5 weeks (46 days) after a potential HIV exposure.

Although most cases of HIV transmission can be accurately detected 4-6 weeks post-exposure by a 3rd generation test, this type of test is only considered conclusive 3 months post-exposure (1,2). You can be quite confident in the results you have received, but re-testing 3 months post-exposure is recommended for completely conclusive results.

Recommendation: Refer to a healthcare provider for HIV testing outside of the window period.

Regards,

AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Marie
