Hello. Firstly thank you for an excellent service.

I am male and I had unprotected sex with a lady who I discovered afterwards was HIV+. I tested negative on a 4th generation test in the UK at 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks. Do I require further tests?

Thank you.

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline.

As you might already know, unprotected sex is considered to be a high risk exposure. You are taking the right steps by getting tested. About 95% of HIV test results are conclusive when the test is taken 4-6 weeks after exposure. However, HIV tests have the most conclusive results when taken 12 weeks (3 months) or more after exposure. I would recommend taking another test at 12 weeks following exposure for the most conclusive results. It is not likely that your results will have changed, however, since this is a high risk exposure it is best to be sure.

For more information about HIV you can always visit the AIDS Vancouver website or CATIE.ca.

I hope this information helps to answer your questions.
