I had sex with a random hooker in Panama 3 years ago and my condom broke. I waited for 15 days and had the RNA test. It was expensive and it took a while as it was sent to the Mayo Clinic and back. The viral load was negligent, which I undestand is the same as testing negative. Three months later I had the regular antibody test and tested negative again. It has been 3 years already, but many times I feel really anxious about it. Could you plese give my your perspective? Thank you in advance.

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

I understand that it is sometimes difficult for individuals to move on after having a potential exposure to HIV.

It helps to know that the HIV/AIDS science has come a very long way, and that advancements in testing has made the early and accurate diagnosis of infection a reality. So I would like to congratulate you for taking the initiative to get tested.

The antibody test that you have conducted after about 100 days of exposure is considered conclusive. If the test was conducted in a professional hospital/clinic environment, then you can trust the results of this test. If there has been no potential exposures to the virus since your last test, then you can trust in your HIV-negative status.

If you feel that the anxiety caused by your potential exposure from 3 years ago is negatively affecting the quality of your life, then we encourage you to communicate with a doctor or mental health care provider in your area to help you address this issue.

I trust that I have answered your question. For additional information on HIV risk, testing, and prevention, feel free to visit our website at http://www.aidsvancouver.org.

In health,

Malath
