Hey so my mom took my dog on walk while I was home shaving my legs. I cut myself shaving and as soon as my dog ran into the house he started to lick my cuts. What if he licked hiv pos fluids before he licked me?

Hi there!

Thank you for using AIDS Vancouver Helpline as your source for HIV/AIDS related information.

You are at absolutely no risk for HIV transmission nor have acquired HIV. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, where the host is human. In order for transmission to occur, there needs to be a direct access for the virus to enter the bloodstream. This is because HIV is a very fragile virus that cannot survive outside the human body. Once the virus is exposed to air or oxygen, whatever surface it is on and whatever fluid it is in, it will die seconds to minutes after exposure. Therefore, in your case, the virus would have died before your dog could even lick the fluid.

Rest assured, you are not at risk for acquiring HIV.

Here is the equation for HIV transmission, which lays out the general criteria needed for HIV acquisition:

---------

BODY FLUID WITH HIGH LEVELS OF HIV
(blood, semen, rectal secretions, pre-cum, vaginal fluids, breast milk)

+

ACTIVITY
(unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, sharing needles, mother to child)

+

DIRECT ACCESS FOR THE VIRUS TO ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM
(vagina, anus, urethra in the penis, open cuts and sores, other mucosal membranes, points of needle injection)

= RISK OF HIV TRANSMISSION

---------

It might also be helpful to check out the risk assessment chart at our Helpline website, which outlines the risk level for other possible activities with regards to transmission of HIV: [http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart](http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart).

I hope this answer was helpful. Please feel free to contact us again if you have further questions or concerns.
