Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. It is good that you have been tested and the negative results are a good indication that you have not acquired HIV. However, the official testing guidelines (World Health Organization) still recommend re-testing at 84 days after exposure for a conclusive result.
I encourage you to get tested again at 84 days in order to put your mind at rest.

I also want to mention that giving unprotected oral sex is considered low risk and receiving oral sex is negligible risk. Based on that, you were not at high risk in your initial contact last February.

As for your girlfriend, she may wish to see doctor to discuss her symptoms and determine whether or not she also needs an HIV test. Since your results so far are negative her condition cannot be clearly connected to you at this stage. Symptoms can't provide a diagnosis of HIV, only a blood test can tell you if someone has the virus.

While you are unsure of your final HIV status, may I also suggest that you use condoms if you are not already using them. Correct use of condoms is always the best way to help protect both you and your partner from the transmission of HIV and other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections).

If you have any other HIV related questions, please feel free to contact the Helpline again.

All the best,

Marnelle
