Good afternoon. My name is Joshua. I have hypothyroidism, and when my doctor examined me about two weeks ago, she felt was she thought was a nodule in my thyroid gland. She is ordering me an ultrasound to determine whether or not I have a nodule, and if so, if it is cancer. Let's say that it is cancer. Given that I had an HIV test result that was negative in April 2015, would that affect the 3-month window period, if the cancer was growing inside of me for months, if not years prior to my most recent HIV test? Or does that only apply to cancer patients that are diagnosed and having chemotherapy treatment at the time they are tested for HIV (6-month window period for cancer patients, I believe.)? Again, I haven't been diagnosed with cancer (at the moment), but I did take a third (and final) HIV test last April of 2015, and it was negative. Thank you for everything that you do as an organization. You're the best.

Hi there! Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your HIV related questions/concerns. We're happy to help!

Thanks for asking a really great question, and I hope that my answer helps to clarify this topic for you!

It seems that you already have a great understanding of what factors affect HIV testing, so I'll just go ahead and clarify the concept. Your test in April 2015 would still be conclusive at 3 months! Cancer itself does not affect the window period of HIV. Treatment of cancer (by chemotherapy, for example) would affect the window period for HIV tests, because they cause an immunosuppresion by the way that they treat the cancer. Therefore, your April test (at 3 months) was conclusive, your potential cancer diagnosis has no effect on your past results, only on future ones if you undergo treatment.

I hope that helped to clarify things for you, and you can visit this website for more general testing information: http://www.avert.org/hiv-testing

Best wishes with your health!

Sincerely,

Christina
