Hello,

Thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your source of HIV related information.

Receiving oral sex is considered negligible risk for HIV transmission, however, there has never been a confirmed report of a person acquiring HIV this way. There would have to major identifiable conditions in order for this to be considered a risk, such as large openly bleeding sores in her mouth(not superficial cuts). This is something you would definitely notice. From this isolated incident I do not believe testing is required. Although, I think it's important that you and your girlfriend discuss your sexual health history together. Talking about your sexual health can minimize your doubts and fears regarding STI's and HIV and help build a trusting relationship. We do always suggest that sexually active people have routine testing for STI's and HIV. Whether that be annually, bi-annually or every few months depending on your needs.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.
