Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about your risk of acquiring HIV through vaginal intercourse (when the condom broke) with someone who is presumed to be of HIV positive status.

From the information given, this scenario is determined to be High Risk: (Evidence of transmission through these activities and is the majority of cases of transmission). Although this was as you described a "single vaginal encounter", there still remains a High Risk of HIV transmission.

If timing permits, please seek out a medical professional who can administer PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), a measure that when administered within 72 hours post exposure can provide a reliable barrier to the acquisition of HIV. PEP should only be used in emergency situations such as the scenario explained above.

If you are continuously engaging in high risk activity there are other biomedical approaches such as PrEP that help lower your risk of acquiring HIV.

Recommendation: Refer to Physician for HIV test.

All the best,

AIDS Vancouver Online/Helpline, Cody
