A couple of days before i found something reddish deep inside my soap bar and i am worried if its hiv blood contained during packaging! After that I washed my hands with cold water! Though i am aware about hiv mode of transmission, yet i am full of fear. Please clear my doubt, about the risk of this situation, considering it was not exposed to air. its I am stressed.

Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your questions. We're happy to help!

I understand that situations like this can be stressful, but hopefully the information I will share with you will help to ease your worries.

The situation you describe is No Risk for HIV transmission. HIV cannot survive outside of the body, as it is a delicate virus that requires the human body's environment to survive. It is not just air exposure that renders HIV inactive, but just the outside environment (anything outside of the body) in general. There would be no viable HIV in a bar of soap, thus, no risk for transmission. Additionally, it's not realistic that soap would contain blood anyways. Finally, washing your hands with soap doesn't provide any sort of access to the bloodstream, for HIV to establish an infection.

I recommend you review the transmission equation below as it outlines what 3 components are necessary for transmission to even be possible. Please note that your situation doesn't contain any of the 3 factors necessary:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
Additionally, please visit avert.org for more information about HIV transmission.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Christina
