I had an exposure of penis head entering twice in my anus for just 10-20 seconds. No ejaculation, just pre-cum.
I got scared and was on PEP for 30 days. I got tested today exactly at 6 weeks or 42 days post pep with 2 HIV tests, one was Rapid uni-gold HIV test and rapid Alere Determine Ag/Ab 4th generation HIV test at the same clinic. both came out negative at 6 weeks post pep. I was wondering will this testing shows that i am negative and what are my chances at 3 month testing ? I know post pep guideline says 3 months testing. i was just nervous and got tested at 6 weeks. And do i also need a 6 months test ? Thanks

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the conclusiveness of your negative test results 6 weeks Post-PEP; what your odds are at 3 months; and whether you will require another test at 6 months.

Sensitivity and specificity of 4th Generation testing methods comes extremely close to 100% (1). The 4th Gen. Alere test is considered a combo test, which, when a negative test result is given, the person can be considered negative for HIV (2). You are correct in assuming that HIV testing guidelines recommend re-testing at approximately 3 months. Although the tests you have received this far are very reliable, it is still responsible to follow these official HIV testing guidelines. For this reason, we recommend you re-test at around 3 months for completely conclusive results. Given there are no further exposures in this time, it is highly likely that you will receive further negative results. After 3 months, no further testing for this exposure will be required in this event.

Recommendation: Refer to Physician for confirmative HIV testing at 3 months.

All the best,

AIDS Vancouver Online/Helpline, Cody
