Hi,

The penis touched the vaginal fluid . I washed it within 10 minutes. Is there a possibility of getting HIV if the girl is also infected?

Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

It sounds like you are concerned about the likelihood of acquiring from the described scenario.

From what you have told me, you are concerned about the likelihood of acquiring HIV from your penis touching vaginal fluid. It is important to note that for there to be a risk of HIV transmission, there needs to be a body fluid, an activity such as unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse and a direct access for the virus to enter the bloodstream. With this taken into account, the HIV virus is very fragile and once exposed to air it begins to breakdown and is no longer transmissible. The activity itself would be a Negligible Risk as there is an exchange of body fluid however, there has never been a confirmed report of someone acquiring HIV in this manner.

Below I have attached an HIV Transmission Equation chart, which goes into further detail about the necessary factors that are required for HIV transmission to be possible.

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
