I'm getting married soon. I recently got a massage, no funny business. However the asian massage therapist did massage my butt very close to the butt crack a few times no anal penetration and no happy ending. Do I need to get tested for stds or hiv. PLease answer in regards to std testing as well. I've receieved a few erotic massages in my life and I've already been tested for all stds a year ago (even though advised that my risk is nonexistent). Please answer if I have anything to worry about to protect my wife and I.

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver for HIV/AIDS related information.

The short answer is no. Massage does NOT place you at risk for HIV, and although we are not trained specifically in STD or STI, you are also not placing yourself or your wife at risk.

Let me explain why. For HIV transmission to occur, the body fluids of a person who is HIV positive (i.e. blood, semen, vaginal fluids) need direct access to YOUR bloodstream through an activity like unprotected anal/vaginal sex. HIV needs a controlled environment such as inside the human body to survive. Once outside of the body (i.e. if there were semen on the hands), it dies within 60 seconds of exposure to oxygen. This is why it cannot be transmitted through skin to skin contact and why massage is a NO RISK activity. This would be the same even if the masseur had penetrated you with her fingers or gave you a hand job.

As for your question about STDs, massage places you at no more risk than any other kind of massage (i.e therapeutic or spa) because there is no exchange of body fluids and no skin to skin contact. While HIV is not transmitted through skin to skin contact, STDs can be. However, this most often occurs in the context of oral sex (i.e. blow jobs) or unprotected vaginal/anal sex where genital areas are involved.

I trust I've answered your questions, however, if you have more, please don't hesitate to write back.

All the best

Maggie
