Hello doctor hope you are doing great. my name is Mash.

I had an unprotected sex with a lady on June 8 2019.

Then I went hospital emergency room at 66 hours and prescribed pep for 28 days. i completed pep without missing any dose.

I was hiv negative at 6th weeks/ 12th weeks and 17th weeks. 4 months after exposure and exactly 3 months after pep.

All test were 4th generation p24 ag/ab. my question is Am I hiv free or should I test again? i am really worried.

Thank you in advance

note : i tested again at 7th months and its came negative

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were seeking clarification on whether you are HIV-negative following four weeks of PEP treatment and negative fourth-generation HIV test results at various time points, with the latest being seven months following your possible exposure.

The fourth-generation (p24 ag/ab) HIV test looks for HIV antibodies and P24 protein antigens (which are a part of the virus) (1). The P24 antigen is detectable immediately after infection and only for the first few weeks following the initial exposure (1). The antibody (ab) test has a window period of 4-12 weeks (1). Most HIV specialists consider this "DUO" test conclusive at 6 weeks (1).

Because you have had negative test results past the window period of 12 weeks, you can be reassured that these test results are conclusive, and you are HIV negative.

Recommendation: No need for another HIV test, refer to a healthcare professional for other health related questions.

Take care,

AIDS Vancouver Online/Helpline, Shirley
