Hello and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source of HIV/AIDS-related information.

The situation that you have described does not present a risk for HIV transmission. HIV transmission requires direct access for the virus to enter the bloodstream. HIV dies upon exposure to oxygen. Therefore, giving or receiving a handjob does not present a risk for HIV transmission, as the virus does not have direct access to enter the bloodstream from one human body to another.

For more information about risky activities for HIV transmission, please take a look at the Risk Assessment Chart on the left-hand-side of the Helpline homepage.

There are no clinically defined symptoms of HIV. The symptoms that you have described, including muscle aches and fever, may be symptoms of another common illness, such as a common cold or the flu.

I hope that I have addressed your concerns. Please feel free to contact us again should you have any further questions.

In health,

Natalie
