I recently made a mistake, visited a massage parlour and received protected oral sex, she briefly licked the bottom of my penis. I am panicking , Am I at risk?

Hello,

Thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your source of HIV information.

I would first like to say HIV does not discriminate against a person's age, ethnicity, race or occupation. HIV can impact anyone. It is in no way a mistake to visit a massage parlour as many people do this for many reasons.

The situation you described does not put you at risk for HIV. Licking the base of your penis is not a risk for transmission. Having protected oral sex is also not a risk for transmission. In order for HIV transmission to occur ALL of the following must occur:

BODY FLUID WITH HIGH LEVEL OF HIV (Blood, semen, rectal secretions, pre-cum, vaginal fluids, breast milk)

      PLUS

ACTIVITY (Unprotected anal or vaginal sex, sharing needles, mother to child)

      PLUS

DIRECT ACCESS FOR THE VIRUS TO ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM (Vagina, anus, urethra of the penis, open cuts and sores, point of needle injection)

From what you described none of this equation was present during the activity you engaged in and you don't need to worry about HIV transmission.

We do encourage all those who are sexually active to participate in routine testing for STI's and HIV. Whether it be annually, bi-annually or every few months depending on your needs.

In Health,
