Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. It sounds like you are concerned about your risk of HIV transmission after a recent trip to a massage parlour where you received protected oral sex and a hand job.

When assessing the risk of HIV transmission, we can refer to the HIV Transmission Equation below:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
You are correct, the risk rating for your situation is Negligible Risk, meaning that there has never been a confirmed report of transmission this way.

I would not recommend HIV testing for this situation.

We do not answer STI questions at AIDS Vancouver, but I have listed some resources below that tell you more about STIs. If you feel that you are exhibiting symptoms of an STI, go to your doctor and s/he will provide you with a test.

I would encourage you to check out the following resources for more information about HIV and STIs:

  • Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
