But as i was having intercourse with her i saw that she had some chest hair on her boobs which made me realize that she might be a man. knowing that hiv rates are higher in men i soon developed anxiety. know i am wondering what my risk are of getting hiv. The condom did not break during intercourse. Assuming that she was hiv positive ad that my condom did not break what are my chances of becoming infected with hiv? risk? help i am really worried and anxious.

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting AIDS Vancouver.
Based on what you've shared with me, you're at low risk of transmitting the HIV because you used a condom.
The reason I say "low risk" is that there have been very few reports of infection attributed to having protected sex (using a condom).
HIV can affect anyone, regardless of gender, profession, sexual orientation etc. so the fact that you had sex with a commercial sex worker, regardless of his/her gender does not increase your risk of HIV transmission. It's great to hear you used a condom as this is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your partners from transmission.
As always, we recommend that all sexually active individuals get tested for all STI's, including HIV, regularly based on their lifestyle.
For further information on transmission I would encourage you to check out the following websites:
http://www.avert.org

I trust that I have answered your question and put your mind at ease, however, should you wish to talk about this further please don't hesitate to contact us again via this forum, email or telephone.

Thank you.
Alia, Sandra & Ernest (AIDS Vancouver Volunteers)
