What are your thoughts on the oral rapid test? Are they as reliable and sensitive as blood test?

Hello and thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver with your question. It sounds like you would like some information about the reliability of the oral rapid test.

The rapid oral swab test looks for antibodies. The window period for this test is 4 weeks to 3 months (although up to 95% of infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks). Most people develop detectable antibodies in 21-25 days. Accuracy is 99.6% Other tests done by drawing blood have a similar accuracy to the oral test.

All HIV tests are considered conclusive 3 months post possible exposure.
