Hello,

What's the validity of the Jal Innovation HIV home tests?

I tested 5 weeks with a duo test and again at 7 weeks with a Jal home test.

I plan to test again with a antibody test at 12 weeks.

Would the negative results I obtained from the two previous tests be a good indicator? Will it likely change?

The Jal tests seem legit and so does the company and they have FDA, CE and SFDA certificates.

It does state with their test to test at 30 and 60 days then follow up with a doctor.

Btw my exposure was protected sex and unprotected oral on a woman....so low risk?

Hello and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as your source of HIV/AIDS related information.

You are correct in stating your overall exposure was low risk. Protected sex and giving oral sex are both low risk for the passing of HIV; this means there has only been a few reports of infection attributed to these activities.

Unfortunately, at the Helpline we cannot comment on the accuracy of home tests (even if they are FDA approved), as these are not perrformed in a standardized environment by a health care professional. With home tests, there is also no opportunity for pre or post test counselling, and they can often yield false results.

Your DUO test performed at 5 weeks, however, is an excellent indication of your negative HIV status. The antibody portion of this test has a window period of 4-12 weeks and most HIV specialists consider the DUO test conclusive at 6 weeks.

It is great to hear you plan to go for a conclusive antibody test at 12 weeks, as this is compliant with international testing guidelines. I fully expect this test to come back negative, based on your prior testing history.

Thanks for writing to us and please contact us again with any more concerns.

Elyse
