Hi,

I have completed pep and tested 3 months after completion with a rapid test. The brand of the rapid test was 'sd bioline ag/ab combo' a finger prick of blood was taken and the results were ready in 20 mins. Are the negative results from this test reliable? Do I need to retest at 6 months after completing pep? Please advice have been worried sick for the past few months and really hope that I am done with this ordeal. Thank you.

Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline forum.

It sounds like you're concerned about the accuracy of your HIV test results.

The results of an HIV test taken 3 months after finishing PEP can be considered to be conclusive. Taking PEP can affect the window period of an HIV test *during* treatment but, the test you took can be considered to be conclusive because you waited long enough *after finishing* PEP treatment.

The test you took has an accuracy rate over 99% at the time it is considered conclusive.

It may not be necessary to get a retest after 6 months post-exposures; the results of the test you took at 3 months post-exposure can be considered conclusive in BC. However, we always recommend following local guidelines from your healthcare professional if they differ from those in BC.

Alternatively, carrying out another test at 6 months post-exposure may simply to put your mind at ease.

I hope this information helps to answer your questions and helps with your worries. For more information about HIV you can always check out the AIDS Vancouver website.
