I visited the steam sauna at the gym, as I entered the other person that was there left and I sat where he was sitting. As I was sitting, I touched the surface /sitting area with my hand and then touched my urethra. My concern that if he had played with himself and left any residue of bodoly fluid on the surface ,
and by touching myself I put myself in any risk?
there wasn't any physical contact with him in any way.

Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your query

It seems that you looking for some information on transmission because you are concerned about the risk of acquiring HIV recently in a steam room.

HIV is a human-to-human virus and can only be passed from one person to another through the direct exchange of body fluids. Once HIV is exposed to the air, the virus becomes intransmissible, which we can reasonably say means that it can no longer cause infection. As such, contact with a body fluid on a surface does not pose a risk.

In the scenario you describe, it's not clear whether there was any body fluid on the bench, but even if there was, it would not be a risk for HIV transmission.
Please have a look at our [Risk Assessment Chart ](http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart)as it lists some common activities and the associated risk factors. It's a great general resource, and we find it's also popular for planning sexual encounters and considering when testing might be required.

For more information specific to men's sexual health, the [Health Initiative For Men ("HIM")](http://talktohim.ca/) team have some great resources.

I hope this gives you the information you were looking for, and enables you to relax and enjoy your next sauna.

Very best wishes
