Ralph
Hello, congratulations for your great job with the Help Line.
I had vaginal sex without condom with a girl. We had hiv rapid test before the sex, both of us were negative, and both of us were more than 3 months without other sex relations. We decided to trust in each other. But today i am concerned about the risk of infection. There is some risk?
Thanks

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the risk of HIV transmission from unprotected vaginal sex. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be High Risk (there is evidence of transmission through these activities and are the majority of cases of transmission).

The scenario mentioned above does meet the three components of the HIV Transmission Equation, which states that HIV transmission requires a bodily fluid (e.g. semen, vaginal fluids, etc.) that has direct access to the bloodstream (e.g. via the vagina, anus, urethra in the penis, etc.) through a High/Low/Negligible Risk activity.

While it was extremely responsible for both of you to have gotten HIV testing prior to your sexual encounter, vaginal sex without a condom is still considered a high risk activity for HIV transmission. It is also worth mentioning that the 'window period' for the HIV rapid test is anywhere between 4 weeks to 3 months, meaning that it could take anywhere within this range of time for this type of test to detect antibodies in the blood against HIV (although up to 95% of infections are detectable within 4-6 weeks). In the event that the other individual did have another sexual encounter, there is always the possibility that she has not yet formed antibodies to HIV, and could therefore have had a false negative test result.

Recommendation: Refer to a health care provider for HIV testing.

Best wishes,
AIDS Vancouver Helpline/Online, Shirley
