Hi, I had exposure few weeks ago with a woman of unknown status. I took 4th Gen test & pcr rna at 8 weeks 2.5 days. I have swollen lymph nodes and rashes since a week and had night sweats ysterday. Don't know about fever.

This is 9th week since exposure.

Here are my questions

1) Are my symptoms related to hiv

2) Are my results conclusive or any good, do i need to tested again? (I looked on net and it has confusing info out there?

Hello and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source of HIV/AIDS-related information.

Regarding symptoms, please note that there are no clinically-defined symptoms of HIV. Some people experience symptoms and some people do not. Furthermore, the symptoms that you have described (fever, rashes, sweats, swollen lymph nodes) may be symptoms of any number of illnesses, including flu or the common cold. The only way to know if you have HIV is to be tested; you cannot go by symptoms.

Many HIV specialists consider the 4th generation "duo" test to be conclusive at 6 weeks post-exposure. Therefore, a negative test result at 8 weeks post-exposure is a very accurate indicator of your status. However, the World Health Organization still requires testing at 12 weeks post exposure for absolutely conclusive results. We would encourage you to get tested again at 12 weeks post exposure just to be sure. Your results will likely NOT change.

I hope that I have addressed your concerns. Please feel free to contact us again should you have any further questions.

In health,

Natalie
