Hey there!

Thanks for reaching out to us at AIDS Vancouver for help. It sounds like you're concerned about your recent experience with a sex worker and how to be sure whether or not you acquired HIV. While we are volunteers and not doctors, I trust I will be able to provide you with reliable information.

First of all, it's great that you used a condom! Because you did, you significantly reduced your chances of acquiring HIV during vaginal sex to a low level. In addition, masturbation (even with vaginal fluids) does not put you at risk of acquiring the virus as to our knowledge this practice has never led to an infection.

I would also like to tell you that symptoms are never used in diagnosis HIV because the virus mimics the symptoms of other infections. The only way to know for sure is through testing so I would recommend partnering with your healthcare professional and getting tested. While any test is considered conclusive at 3 months post exposure, taking a test now will still give you a strong indication of your status and might provide some peace of mind.

Here is a list of testing sites in Canada: and the US: Let us know if there's anything else we can do for you!

In Health,
Jeremy
