I had unprotected sex with another male approximately 3 moths ago. I do not know if he is infected or not. A week ago, I started feeling sick; I had a sore throat. I went to the doctor and he said my left tonsil was very swollen and that it might be an abscess, so I started taking antibiotics and after 4 days it got much, much better. I have no pain now.
The doctor changed one of the antibiotics, and ever since the first time I took the first pill I felt sick. At night, 3 hours (approximately) after taking the second pill, my face started to itch and the rash lasted for about 5-10 minutes.
I've been reading a lot about HIV and I read that the most common symptoms include: rash and sore throat. I know I might be overreacting, but I am scared I could actually have contracted HIV.
Can it be a possibility or is it just my nerves?
Thanks.

Hello and thanks for reaching out to the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

It seems you are worried that you might have been infected with HIV after engaging in an unprotected sex activity. We are glad to provide some information.

Engaging in unprotected sex is regarded as a High Risk activity. This is because this activity has repeatedly been associated with HIV infection. However we do not determine the HIV status of an individual using symptoms as some of the symptoms can be caused by other viral infections that are not associated with HIV. The only way to determine whether you contracted HIV is by getting tested. We recommend that you get tested since you do not know the status of the other individual.

You can arrange an HIV test through your doctor or alternatively use one of the many testing centers now available. You can use the [Aids Map e-atlas](http://www.aidsmap.com/e-atlas) to locate the nearest testing center.

The AIDS Vancouver Helpline Online forum has postings that are related to your question that you can read for additional information. If you have any further questions feel free to contact us again.

Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
