Hi when i took the bus today, i realized that i sat on what looked like semen. It soaked into my pants and into my underwear. I could not change as I was already late for work and wore the stained "soaked" pants for the rest of the work day. approx 12 hours. Am I at risk of contracting hiv?

Hi there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the possibility of HIV transmission from what appeared to be semen 'soaking' through your pants. From the information given, this scenario is determined to be No Risk (HIV transmission is not possible in the given scenario).

This scenario does not meet the 3 requirements of the HIV Transmission Equation (see image below). Although there is a possible HIV positive fluid involved (e.g. semen), it has no direct access to the bloodstream through a High, Low, or Negligible Risk activity.

Semen that has been on an environmental surface (in this case being the bus seat and your pants), would have had a significant amount of time exposed to oxygen, which causes a rapid reduction in HIV concentration and can therefore render any possible HIV particles in the fluid inactive.

Recommendation: No need for HIV testing in the given scenario, refer to a healthcare professional for any additional health related questions.

Best regards,
AIDS Vancouver Online/Helpline, Shirley
