Hello,

I got semen on my face and some shot up into my nose. After about 30 seconds to 1minute after, I went to the bathroom to wash it off with hot soapy water, but ended up snorting it in, instead of blowing it out. Is there any risk of contracting HIV in this manner? The guy's HIV status is unknown.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your questions, we're happy to help!

This is a No Risk situation. HIV needs direct access to the blood stream in order to establish an infection. This occurs either through a severe wound, intravenous drug use, or through mucous membranes in the vagina, anus, or the urethra. Without this, there isn't a way for HIV to establish an infection, so there is no risk for transmission in this scenario. Additionally, on top of this, HIV needs direct contact between bodily fluids like during penetrative sex. HIV cannot survive exposure to the outside environment, so the virus would've become damaged and inactivated and thus there is no risk of infection.

This website may help to explain how HIV is transmitted, and clear things up for you: http://www.avert.org/hiv-transmission-prevention

I hope this helped!

Sincerely,

Christina
