I have a sexual health question. I've received oral sex a couple of times, the last time being about two years ago. I've only ever experienced it maybe four times with different people. But lately I've started getting paranoid about std's and HIV especially. Do you think i should get checked out?

Hi there, and thanks a lot for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for you HIV/AIDS related health information.

It sounds like you are concerned about your risk of HIV and STI transmission.

Receiving oral sex is considered a Negligible Risk activity. This means that it can present a potential for HIV transmission because can involve the exchange of body fluids. However, there has never been a confirmed report.

On this forum, we focus on HIV risk assessment, for more information about STIs I would encourage you to go to [Smart Sex Resource's website](https://smartsexresource.com/).

Here at AIDS Vancouver we encourage everyone to make HIV testing a part of their regular health care maintenance routine. The only way to know your status is to be tested. I think it's a great idea for you to start this practice!

When you visit your health care provider you can ask for an HIV test as well as an STI test.

I would also encourage you to check out the following resources about HIV:

  • HIV Basics

  • Risk Assessment Chart

  • Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.
