Hello
I don't know why I am so scared. I was poked by a sharp pin at my workplace. It was used by other guy too. I am scared if it poked him too and he has any disease like hiv. I am getting bad feelings day by day. I work as a welder. Can I get hiv if someone poked by that pin 8 hours before?

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline.

Getting poked by a needle/pin that has been exposed to air for a long period of time (longer than a few minutes) does not constitute any risk of HIV infection. That is because the virus is very weak and cannot live outside the human body as it dies soon upon its exposure to air. Getting poked by the pin 8 hours after it has potentially been in contact with one of your co-workers thus puts you at no risk of HIV infection. However, you might need to get a Tetanus shot so it is advisable that you get in contact with a health professional and inform them of this incident.

I trust that I have answered your question.

In health,

Malath
