Hello there and thanks for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS related information.

The simple answer to your question is no, you are not at risk and this is why. For an HIV risk to exist, certain HIV+ body fluids must come into direct contact with the bloodstream of an HIV- individual. Secondly, HIV is a very weak virus and dies once exposed to air. Therefore there is no risk from your exposure to the pin. You may wish to discuss the possibility of a tetanus with your doctor, as these vaccines do expire after a number of years.

We trust we have addressed your concerns however, should further information be required, feel free to contact us again.

In good health,

Jonathan & Reeman, AIDS Vancouver Helpline Volunteers
