Dear Doctor,

I've recently become sexually active with a new partner. When having sex, we always use a condom. There have been a number of times, however, when he has rubbed his penis tip on my vagina, used his penis tip to stimulate my clitoris, etc. One time we also had an accidental slip, and the very tip of his penis entered inside me (not past the head).

What is my HIV risk from this interaction? I'm particularly concerned about the slip.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting our Helpline for HIV related information. We are happy to assist you.

I can see that you're feeling some anxiety about a possible unprotected exposure and what your HIV risk may be from this.

The rubbing of his penis on your vagina would be considered a Negligible Risk for HIV (there has never been a confirmed transmission from this activity). However, the insertion of the tip of the penis in the vagina, however, would be considered a High Risk because it would be considered unprotected intercourse.

For this interaction, it would be a good idea to get an HIV test. HIV antibody tests are considered conclusive at 3 months, but they are 95% accurate at 4-6 weeks, so talk to your local clinic or doctor about where to get tested.

Visit our Risk assessment chart for more info on transmission risk: http://helpline.aidsvancouver.org/question/risk-assessment-chart

I hope I have addressed your concerns. Feel free to contact us again through our forums, email, or phone line if you have further questions.

Thanks,

Sandra
