I was threatened with a needle and received a small cut on my hand that broke the skin, but did not bleed. Is there any concern of hiv transmission? I washed right away.

Hi there and thank you for using the AIDS Vancouver Helpline as a source for HIV/AIDS related information.

I'm not exactly sure of what "threatened with a needle" means. Was it an act of violence or an accident? Regardless, If there was no fluid injected into your body, there is no risk for HIV. Let me explain why: HIV is a very weak virus and dies once exposed to air. Additionally, HIV needs to have direct contact with your blood stream for a risk to exist. Not only must it have direct contact with your bloodstream, in must be in an airtight host.

I trust I have addressed your concerns however, should further information be required, feel free to contact us again.
