Hello, my previous question told you I was threatened with a syringe which had left a small non bleeding area of broken skin on my hand. I forgot to tell you that It was used by someone within probably seconds to minutes before this incident as I walked in on a group of people and thus the reason I was threatened. I did wash right away and did not appear to bleed. But did get a shallow cut with no scab noted. Any need for hiv testing?

Hi there,

Thank you for using AIDS Vancouver Helpline as your source for HIV/AIDS related information.

From the information you gave us, it seems that your contact with the needle resulted in no exchange of blood or bodily fluids. For a risk to exist, certain HIV positive fluids must come into direct contact with the bloodstream of an HIV-negative individual. In your case, this did not happen.

Additionally, as I believe we previously explained to you, HIV is an extremely weak virus and dies immediately once exposed to air.

Although we don't feel HIV testing is required for this activity, we do encourage everyone to be tested for all STIs including HIV on a regular basis.

I trust I have addressed your concerns. However, should further information be required, feel free to contact us again.
