Hi I am a Singaporean and I appreciate your organization's work. I am just filled with anxiety.

Today I went for a massage which was done by a commercial sex trade worker. I was given a handjob at the end. But she spit on my penis head and used her Saliva as lubricant. It was dark and I do not know whether there were any traces of blood in her saliva. Do I have a risk of acquiring HIV. I did not have any other sexual activity with her.

Hi and thank you so much for coming to AIDS Vancouver with your question.

It sounds like you're anxious about your risk of acquiring HIV after being exposed to saliva.

First, receiving a handjob is considered a No Risk activity. This means that there has never been a case of transmission with this activity.

About the saliva, this is also considered No Risk. This is because the HIV virus dies as soon as it reaches the air. As well, saliva has enzymes that kill the HIV virus. You can consider your risk of acquiring HIV from this situation to be none.

A great resource for the future if you're ever wondering about your risk level is the Risk Equation:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection

As well, we at AIDS Vancouver do recommend regular HIV testing for anyone who is sexually active. It's a great way to take charge of your health and to ease your mind. If you would like any other information about HIV you can check out our website at: .

Thank you again for posting in our forum, and we hope we answered your question!
