Hello and thanks for contacting AIDS Vancouver with your question. It sounds like you are concerned about your risk of HIV transmission after receiving a stick and poke tattoo from an HIV positive individual.

Tattooing with non professional equipment is considered a Low Risk activity. This means that practices assigned to this risk level present a potential for HIV transmission because they involve an exchange of body fluids. There have been a few reports of infection attributed to these activities (usually under certain identifiable conditions).

What we do know is that:

* HIV needs a human host to survive. Once HIV is outside of the body and exposed to oxygen (on the a person's hands or the surface of a needle) it can not longer transmit.

The only way to know your status is to be tested. Here at AIDS Vancouver we encourage everyone to make HIV testing a part of their regular healthcare maintenance routine. If you would like to get an HIV test you can ask for one from your doctor, or, you can click on the links below to find a testing site near you:

  • CDC (USA)

  • HIV 411

  • AIDSmap (Outside of Canada & USA)
