Hi there,

Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for HIV related information.

The 4th Generation Test, which tests for both antibodies and P24 protein antigens, does cover all known strains of HIV. According to [www.avert.org](http://www.avert.org/hiv-types.htm), HIV can be separated into 4 major groups: "The 'major' group M, the 'outlier' group O and two new groups, N and P". Most prevalent in BC and North America is Group M, and all HIV tests conducted in Canada test for the most common Group M strains, but the 4th Generation EIA Test tests for all groups and even rare subtypes. For more information, you can visit the [www.avert.org/hiv-types.htm](http://www.avert.org/hiv-types.htm).

I trust I have addressed your concerns. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us again.

In good health,

Tiina
