Is strep throat a possible sign of hiv?

Hello,

Thank you for using AIDS Vancouver as your source of HIV/AIDS related information.

Strep throat is not considered a sign of HIV, while things like sore throats have been seen in some people living with HIV, we do not regard there to be any "typical" symptoms associated with HIV infection. The only way to see if a person has HIV is through testing.

Things like strep throat are also very easy to pass to others through close contact with an infected individual, so keep in mind that it is a relatively common infection people have, unlike HIV.

It is good to know too that many people believe they may have symptoms of HIV when really these are just stress related. It is astonishing just how worked up our bodies can get as a result of too much stress or worrying about possible transmission of STIs including HIV.

Please let us know if you have any further questions. If you would like to speak to someone confidentially and anonymously at the Helpline you can do so by calling 604.696.4666, Monday to Friday between 9am-4pm.
