Three months later, i have cherry size swollen lymph node under my jaws on both side. Since then the swollen lymph node is there for more than three months now. Is it hiv? I am afraid to have a blood text. What should i do?

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline. I am happy to help you.

In terms of your overall situation, you would be considered to be at low risk of acquiring HIV. In terms of your symptoms, we do not use symptoms to determine status here at AIDS Vancouver because there are no clinically defined symptoms for HIV. This means that some people show them, others don't, and they often get confused with other illnesses like the flu. For this reason, it might be in your best interest to get them checked out by a healthcare professional, as well as receive and HIV tests. I cannot personally say if this is a case of HIV.

If you are afraid of needles or having blood drawn (like I am!) there is another option for a clinical HIV test. You may wish to receive a rapid test- it is a mere finger prick in Canada and an oral swab in the USA. These are other options for you, however, the typical blood test isn't painful in itself.

I hope I have answered your questions. If you have any more questions, feel free to post on this forum again, visit http://www.aidsvancouver.com, or call us confidentially at 604-253-0566 ext 299.

Sincerely,

Caroline
