Hi there and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Online Helpline.

It is unlikely that a syringe would be reused in a medical setting. However, it was the most important detail is whether it was used to inject or to draw blood. If the syringe was used to inject there could be a high risk of acquiring HIV. This is because blood can remain in the barrel of the needle without being exposed to air and is then injected into your body. If you have reason to believe that a syringe was reused to inject I would recommend getting tested.

Reusing a syringe to draw blood may be a little less risky because it is less likely that blood from the barrel of the needle would be used to inject. When HIV in bodily fluids (such as blood) is exposed to the air it becomes non-transmissible. Any blood on the outside of the syringe would have been exposed to the air and would not contain transmissible HIV.

I hope this information helps to answer your questions.
