Hi, this is a continuation of a previous question, thank you for your help! I was in a new relationship, we had unprotected sex, we both tested 50 days after first sleeping together for HIV, both of our tests were negative. When we were sleeping together unprotected he insisted he was "clean" but I knew afterwards I couldn't just trust his word, so I asked him to get tested, and he did. I never have unprotected sex, but was lonely and I really regret the whole ordeal. Anyway I insisted on condoms for a while before breaking it off with him as he became abusive, and after I broke it off I tested solo 8 weeks later of being completely abstinent, my duo antigen/antibody ELISA HIV test results negative. I then rested again at 100 days of being completely abstinent, same ELISA test with non-reactive results. Can I put HIV behind me and move on? I feel so guilty.

Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline for your HIV related questions and concerns. We are happy to help!

In terms of testing, all tests are considered conclusive after 12 weeks (84 days). The only exceptions are:

1) If you're on antiviral treatment for hepatitis C

2) If you're on treatment for cancer (chemotherapy)

3) If you're on PEP/PREP Treaatment for HIV

4) If you have an immunodeficiency disease (you would know as they are diagnosed during infancy).

In those cases, the tests are conclusive after 6 months. However, assuming those do not apply to you, your test at 100 days should be considered accurate and conclusive and you do not require further testing.

Hopefully this helped!

Sincerely,
Christina
