Can you help clear something up both this website and others say that the 4th generation test detects all known groups and strains, but the HIV Insite says the following "Some HIV antibody tests will not detect HIV-2 (a strain of HIV that is found in western Africa) and some more uncommon strains of HIV-1. The 4th generation test definitely test for HIV 2, but what about the more uncommon strains HIV 1?

Hi there! Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your HIV related questions/concerns. We're happy to help!

It can definitely be confusing to determine what certain HIV tests do or do not test for! I can definitely clear this up for you!

You're correct in that the 4th generation test does detect HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies! The 4th generation test indeed detects all known strains of HIV-1, so there is no need to worry about these uncommon strains that you're referring to. This test is very comprehensive and will cover all of the possible strains!

I hope this helped!
