Hello

I had my unwanted hair on my cheeks removed by threading at the barber shop. At the end of it, I saw a drop of blood on my cheek. I wiped it away with my finger but then I couldn't see a scar or anything that shows the source of blood. I believe it was just blood from one my hair roots. I wonder if it is possible for me to get hiv from the saliva on the string if the barber had some scars in his mouth.

I know this is a long shot and might seem weird but I am really worried, thank you for your attention.

Hello there,

Thank you for your inquiry. From what we gather from the question, you were asking about the possibility of risk of HIV transmission through saliva that was on a string used on you for hair threading.

From the information given, it is considered to be of No Risk (transmission of HIV is not possible in the given scenario). This scenario does not meet the three components of the Transmission Equation. For the risk to exist, HIV positive fluid must come into direct contact with the bloodstream of a person not living with HIV. In this case, there is no possibility of HIV transmission to any possible scars on your cheeks because "HIV does not survive long outside the human body (such as on surfaces), and it cannot reproduce outside a human host" (1). Another factor that considers this case as a No Risk, also depends on the amount of saliva content on the string while threading your hair on your cheeks. In general, saliva contains an enzyme that inhibit HIV transmission. The inhibition of HIV is observed by the large sugar protein molecules in saliva called glycoprotein that enables HIV to form large clumps that reduce the possibility of causing a transmission on your skin (2). Therefore, there is no chance of transmission of HIV because it does not meet any of three components of the Transmission equation.

Recommendation: There are no evidence or no documented cases of transmission. Please refer to a healthcare professional for more personalized information.
