Hi there and thank you for reaching out to AIDS Vancouver with your questions! We're happy to help.

The situations that you have described above are considered No Risk. Here is a copy of the HIV Transmission Equation we use here at AIDS Vancouver:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection

As you can see, the virus requires direct access to the bloodstream in order for there to be a risk of HIV transmission.

1) Shaking hands is a No Risk situation. There is no way for the virus to enter your bloodstream: your unbroken skin and nails do not provide direct access. Even if you did have a cut on your hand, the cut would need to be gushing blood and require immediate and professional medical attention in order to pose as a risk.

2) Again, licking and sucking on ears and neck does not provide direct access to the bloodstream, and thus this is also considered No Risk.

I hope I have answered your questions, and feel free to contact us with any further concerns.

Sierra, Helpline Volunteer
