Dear Counsellors,

I am writing from India. I had an episode with a CSW, the only activities was receiving oral sex and kissing on the lips. I have taken 2 tests one at 98 days post exposure and another at 168 days post exposure. The lab gave the results on the same day itself both results were non reactive. They have used the eclia test for both the times. I have asked for elisa test and they inform me that this methord is newer and more sensitive. I am in a great deal of stress and feel remorseful for my action. I am about to get married soon, please advice if I need to go for further testing with different tests.

Hello and thank you for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline regarding HIV/AIDS related information.

We are not counsellors, but are highly trained volunteers that answer helpline questions.

First of all, commercial sex workers don't pose a greater risk than anyone else regardless of their age, gender, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. In fact, many of them take greater precautions in order to protect themselves and their partners.

I congratulate you for taking the initiative to receive testing. Your results are conclusive because according to WHO (World Health Organization) testing is considered conclusive at the 12 week or 84 day mark. No further testing is necessary, unless there has been a high risk exposure since the incident you mentioned.

Since you were unsure about the ELISA test, here is some information to help you understand the test. The ELISA test looks for antibodies that the body develops in response to an HIV infection. The window period is 4 weeks to 3 months, with up to 95% of infections being detected within 4-6 weeks. Third generation ELISA tests are 99.8% accurate after 3 months. The third generation ELISA test is also the most common and the standard form of HIV testing available across Canada.

I hope this makes you feel more at ease about your testing results.

I trust that I have addressed all of your concerns, should you need more assistance, feel free to contact us again.

In health,

Harman
