Hi there,

I just found an old band-aid at our door step when returning home. I stupidly picked it up to throw it away but I unfolded it (it was stuck together) with my bare hands and the white part was not bloody but there seemed to be a smallish (2-3mm) red dot on the brownish part.
I'm not quite sure if I immediately washed my hands but since I'm suffering from acne, I may have touched my face after having handled the old band-aid.
Do I have to worry about contracting HIV or sth. else ?
Please help.

Regards

Chris

Hi there! Thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver helpline with your HIV related questions and concerns. We're happy to help!

I understand this must have been a concerning situation, but I'm happy to let you know that your situation is No Risk for two different reasons.

1) HIV is a very delicate virus, which means that once it's outside of the body and exposed to the general environment, it can no longer be transmitted. This is because factors such as light, temperature, etc. in the environment cause it to become damaged and inactivated, eliminating any risk.

2) Your acne wouldn't provide direct access to the blood stream. In order to do this, a wound/opening must be either gushing blood, or need immediate medical attention such as stitches.

So overall, there is no risk at all of acquiring HIV! I hope this helped! Check out this website for more HIV transmission info:

I hope this helped!

SIncerely,

Christina
