Hello! I'm a male who had unprotected oral sex from a sex worker 4 days ago. She told me she had no cuts in her mouth and still doesn't. I didn't notice blood on my penis after she was done . So far I haven't had any HIV symptoms. I'm just really stressed about my status. If she had a cut in her mouth and the tip of my penis got in contact with that, was I supposed to notice the blood on my penis because I didn't see blood?

Thank you for your help.

Hi and thanks for contacting the Helpline,

I'm sorry that you're feeling stressed about your HIV status.

To start with, receiving oral sex is considered a Negligible Risk activity. What this means is that though there is a hypothetical potential for HIV transmission because there is an exchange of bodily fluids, there has never been a confirmed report.

From your situation you do not need to be concerned about HIV, however there may be a risk of other STIs. You might consider getting an STI test at this point, and you may also consider getting an HIV test while you're already there. We at AIDS Vancouver do recommend regular HIV and STI for anyone who is sexually active.

To re-iterate, there has never been a case of transmission from receiving oral sex, and whether or not you get tested is your choice. You do not need to be stressed about your HIV status from this situation!

Here is a link to our risk assessment chart, it may help you to recognize risk levels in the future: Again, thanks for contacting the Helpline and you are welcome to post again if you have any remaining questions.
