I am an HIV negative male top while my partners HIV status is unknown and he is a bottom. If he was HIV positive, what is the likelihood of me contracting HIV having unprotected anal sex if I 1.ejaculate inside him. Or 2. Pull out before I ejaculate inside him.

Hi there, thanks for contacting the AIDS Vancouver Helpline with your HIV related concerns and questions!

I understand that you're worried about the likelihood of contracting HIV from unprotected sex, hopefully this answer will be able to help you.

I have attached here the HIV Transmission equation to refer to:

HIV TRANSMISSION EQUATION

BODY FLUID
+
ACTIVITY
+
DIRECT ACCESS TO BLOODSTREAM
---------- -------- ----------------------------
• blood (including menstrual) • unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse • vagina
• semen • sharing needles • anus
• pre-cum • mother to child (in specific cases) • urethra in the penis
• rectal secretions • open cuts and sores (in theory)
• vaginal fluids • other mucosal membranes
• breast milk • points of needle injection
In your case, since bodily fluids were being exchanged during unprotected anal sex (in the anus), this is considered a High Risk Activity. Pulling out doesn't affect the risk, as the bodily fluids are still being exchanged.

As a safety measure, consider getting tested with your partner now, and again 3 months post exposure for conclusive results.

Additionally, here at AIDS Vancouver we recommend the safest measure as being condom use for protected sex.

Check out [sexsmartresource.com](sexsmartresource.com) for more information on safe sex.

Additionally, if you need to locate testing sites in your area, feel free to use these websites:

Canadian Testing Sites: [HIV411.ca](HIV411.ca)

USA Testing Sites: [AIDS.gov](AIDS.gov)

Hopefully this answer was helpful!

Sincerely,

Christina
